We’re kicking off a new monthly gear giveaway series with DPA’s d:screet 4080 Miniature Cardioid Lavalier Microphone. Combining high audio quality with low visibility, the 4080 is well suited for both the studio and the field. Acoustically pre-equalized and offering a 4 dB presence boost, the 4080 makes the voice more distinguishable and improves speech intelligibility. Professionals will appreciate the light weight and the excellent speech reproduction. The 4080 includes a pre-mounted black pop filter in a holder with an integrated shock mount fixed on a clip. All parts of the microphone are manufactured in highly-resistant materials and designed to perform under stress.
Two mics in one? The miniature DPA 4080 was designed for situations when a cardioid lavalier mic is needed, and is great for that use. However, it caught our eyes and ears as an excellent microphone for film/video production as a plant mic, particularly for dialogue scenes in car interiors. Its cardioid pattern is wide enough to be forgiving during actor’s head turns, and can even pick up two actors sitting close to each other, preventing multipath phasing common with two or more mics. Its longer brother, the DPA 4098 miniature gooseneck mic, has become a popular choice for car interiors, but when its tighter supercardioid pattern is too narrow for use in close proximity, the 4080 will shine.
The 4080 is not offered by DPA in a gooseneck version, which would often be preferred for planting below on car consoles or above in car visors. So, Trew Audio developed their solution, the UniFlex™, which is a DPA 4080 installed in a miniature gooseneck, similar to the 4098. The winner of this month’s giveaway will have their choice of either the standard DPA 4080 with clip-on mount or Trew Audio’s UniFlex gooseneck configuration with integral TA5 connector for popular wireless transmitters.
