  • BY
  • November 8, 2013

life-of-pi-tigerLast night, the always entertaining and “plug-filling” Leon Silverman of Walt Disney Studios ushered out one of my favorite award shows of the year – the Hollywood Post Alliance Awards. “Celebrating the Art of Post Production,” the 77 minute reception paces a stellar evening honoring sound, visual effects, editing and color grading.

As we tweeted along with the statue passing, Pacific Rim grabbed top honors for feature film VFX and Oscar winning editor William Goldenberg, ACE won for Argo. The Ben Affleck directed film snagged two awards during the evening, the other being for sound by Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van Der Ryn.

Game of Thrones won two as well with VFX work from Joe Bauer and for sound with Tim Kimmel and the team over at TODD AO. A few of my favorite moments were when David Cole took home the prize for color grading Life of Pi and when Anthony Smith was pleasantly shocked for his color grading win on Castle – Hunt.

During the ceremony, the HPA presented Avid with the Charles S. Swartz Award for their revolution on nonlinear editing that dates back 25 years ago. Louis Hernandez Jr, CEO, accepted the award on behalf of the technology savvy company.

Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production was honored with the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production for their next-gen HFR 48fps stereoscopic 3D work.

Four engineering excellence awards were also handed out. They are DTS, Inc for MDA, NVIDA for Visual Computing Appliance (VCA), Sony Pictures Imageworks and The Foundry for FLIX and Telestream for the 16 bit 4:4:4:4 transcoding technology.

SMPTE and Hollywood Post Alliance Present Sold-Out Women in Technology Event

  • BY
  • October 24, 2013

SMPTE_LogoLOS ANGELES — Oct. 24, 2013 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the Hollywood Post Alliance® (HPA) Women in Post presented “Wendy Aylsworth in Conversation with Friends” to a full house on Monday in conjunction with the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in Hollywood. The event, which sold out well in advance, attracted a diverse group of women who are engaged in a variety of roles in the media and technology industry. SMPTE is the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries. The Women in Post group of the HPA — the trade association for the postproduction community — attracts professional women who fill many technical, creative, and leadership roles in postproduction. SMPTE and HPA worked together to develop the event as a way to reach these women, who have crucial responsibilities and face many challenges.

This business can be a really great place for women, particularly when they can benefit from the knowledge and support of experienced female professionals excelling in the field,” said SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange. “Leaders and mentors like Wendy are doing wonderful work to attract more women to the business, and the strong interest in this sold-out event shows how inspiring and valuable the connections among women are for our industry.”

During the luncheon, SMPTE President Wendy Aylsworth, senior vice president of technology at Warner Bros. Technical Operations, joined Jacki Morie, CEO of All These Worlds, and Poppy Crum, senior scientist at Dolby Laboratories, in a vibrant discussion about what it takes to be a woman working in the entertainment and media technology industry. Drawing on more than 50 years of collective experience, the three shared their perspectives on being successful in an industry that still lacks women.

Women are a fundamental part of the media and entertainment technology workforce, and the future will rely on finding the best talent for technical and executive roles,” said Eileen Kramer, executive director of HPA. “SMPTE and HPA Women in Post offered a valuable array of insights to women who work, or will be working, in one of the most invigorating, challenging, and rewarding careers in the media and entertainment industry.”

A number of important points arose from the event, including the need for focus on creativity and mentorship. Aylsworth spoke of the importance of thinking creatively to attract more women to a business that will continue to need the best and brightest talent, and Morie provided practical ideas for making it happen. Crum emphasized the importance of having a mentor “to encourage you and to allow you to make mistakes” in the process of exploring new ideas and possibilities.

Hollywood Post Alliance Honors Avid with the Charles S. Swartz Award

  • BY
  • October 15, 2013

hpaOctober 15, 2013 (Los Angeles, CA) The Hollywood Post Alliance® – the trade association for the post production community – has announced that Avid® will receive the 2013 Charles S. Swartz Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Post Production. The HPA will present the honor during the 8th Annual HPA Awards, which takes place on the evening of November 7th, 2013 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA. Louis Hernandez, Jr, President and CEO of Avid, will accept the award on behalf of the company.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA, commented on the award, “From its founding days to the present, Avid has not only helped to lead our industry’s transition to new, powerful digital creative tools, but has also expanded the creative image and sound post production palette in a way that has fundamentally enabled new creative abilities. Building on their strong heritage of innovation, it is exciting to see Avid’s ongoing dedication to our community.”

Recognized as a leading provider of audio and video technology for media organizations and content creators, Avid’s tools and products are widely used by creative and media professionals around the world to make, distribute and monetize content. Avid led the revolution in non-linear editing over 25 years ago, irrevocably changing the way that creative projects were finished. Unveiling a prototype of their first non-linear editing system – the avid/I – at the 1988 NAB, within just a few years Avid’s category-defining products began to dethrone traditional film editing. Non-linear digital editing came to be the predominant standard, and the company has continually exerted its influence through its extensive R&D, development of IP, and expansion into audio production, broadcast, and live sound. The company’s products have been recognized with numerous industry and technology awards, including 2 OSCARS® a GRAMMY®, and 14 EMMYS®. The company holds over 200 patents.

Avid continues to develop crucial new technologies, and is at the forefront of helping an industry in rapid change, continually move forward. In September, the company announced “Avid Everywhere,” its vision to connect creative professionals and media organizations with their audiences in a more powerful, efficient, collaborative, and profitable way. In a major move to broaden collaboration across its community of customers and industry partners, the company also announced the creation of the Avid Customer Association, a comprehensive initiative designed to provide essential strategic leadership to the media industry, collaborate with key industry leaders and visionaries, and deepen relationships between the company and its customers.

Hernandez said of the award, “We are deeply honored to receive this award, and are especially proud to be recognized by the HPA, the voice of the post community. The post production industry has always been a source of innovation and inspiration. From the beginning, Avid has had deep roots within this community and, we are dedicated to being your trusted partner long into the future.”

The award was named in honor of the late Charles S. Swartz, who led the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California from 2002 until 2006, helping to build it into the industry’s premier test bed for new digital cinema technologies. Charles was a member of the Hollywood Post Alliance Board of Directors until his passing in 2007. The Charles S. Swartz Award is not bestowed every year, but rather only as worthy recipients are identified. Silverman concluded, “The mission of the Charles S Swartz Award is to recognize those efforts that have had profound and global impact on post production. Avid, throughout its 25-plus year history, has impacted our post production community so significantly that they indeed exemplify the meaning of this Award and so honor the memory of our friend and colleague Charles Swartz.”

The HPA Awards were designed to draw attention to the creative work being done in post production by companies and individuals. During the upcoming event in November, awards will be presented in 13 craft categories, as well as special awards, including the Charles S. Swartz Award, a Judges Award for Creativity & Innovation and the Engineering Excellence Award. Nominees for the craft categories as well as a number of special award winners were announced earlier.
