When we’re traveling with our filmmaking gear, safety is our top priority. The thought of anything damaging our cameras and lenses is beyond terrifying. At the same time, we don’t want to break our backs lugging heavy cases around. That’s why we were excited to test out Manfrotto’s new Advanced Travel Backpack. Designed to carry both camera gear and personal belongings, this backpack is aimed at DSLR filmmakers and photographers on the go. This backpack pairs perfectly with the CHESTER carry on, which you can get here now at 10% off.
The Advanced Travel Backpack, which received a prestigious European Red Dot design award, is built to be both sleek and sturdy. At first glance, the pack doesn’t scream “Look, everyone! I’m carrying expensive camera gear!”, which is ideal for keeping a low profile while traveling. The pack’s durable nylon exterior looks and feels like it would hold up to years of use without suffering from any major wear and tear. A specially applied water-repellent coating keeps the pack resistant to moisture, and a fold-out rain/dust cover is also included for additional protection from the elements.
With external dimensions measuring 18.9’’ high by 11.81’’ long by 9.06” wide, it’s large enough to carry your essential gear without being oversized or bulky. It also meets the current requirements for airline carry-on luggage (but with requirements always changing, it’s always best to confirm before boarding).
The pack is divided into two main compartments: a top section for personal items and a bottom section for equipment. The gear section is designed to accommodate a DSLR with an attached lens, two additional lenses, and other various accessories of your choosing. Most standard lenses should fit nicely, but you’ll obviously need to leave your 5200mm super telephoto lenses at home. The modular section dividers can be adjusted or removed as needed, and the entire section is easily accessed by a convenient side zipper.
The pack features several internal and external zippered pockets for smaller items like memory cards and filters, along with a dedicated rear pocket sized to carry a 13” laptop. An extendable padded side pocket is designed for carrying Manfrotto’s Befree tripod or other travel tripods of similar size (up to 15.75” in height). The adjustable hanging straps on the front of the pack are also ideal for transporting tripods.
We loaded up our Advanced Travel Backpack with a DSLR and an attached lens, along with two additional mid-sized lenses, several memory cards, extra batteries, a laptop, chargers, and connector cords. We would have liked to have the option to divide the top personal compartment into smaller sections in case we needed to carry an additional camera body or lenses, but we were still very satisfied with the amount of interior space. Overall, all of our gear packed in nicely and felt safe and secure, thanks to the pack’s generous interior padding.
Even when fully loaded with gear, the backpack was very comfortable to wear. The straps and back area have a generous amount of padding, and the optional waist and chest straps help to distribute the weight evenly for longer wear. Whether you’re strolling through the city or trekking through the jungle for hours on end, this pack will carry your gear without straining your back and shoulders. If you’re a DSLR filmmaker or photographer looking for a compact, dependable bag solution, we would recommend the Manfrotto Advanced Travel backpack. The pack retails for about $150 USD and is available in black, blue, brown, and grey.
